In the summer of 2026, Long Island Musical Theatre Festival presented Carrie: The Musical as part of an ambitious season featuring two fully staged productions, with Carrie presented alongside our Main Stage production of GYPSY. The Festival also welcomed Broadway performer and educator Jeanna de Waal for a masterclass with our students. De Waal has a special connection to Carrie, having originated the role of Chris Hargensen in MCC Theater’s 2012 Off-Broadway revival before going on to originate the title role in Diana: The Musical on Broadway. Her masterclass gave our students the rare opportunity to work with an artist whose own professional history was directly connected to a work they were bringing to the LIMTF stage.
Based on Stephen King’s iconic novel, Carrie: The Musical tells the story of Carrie White, an isolated teenager navigating the cruelty of her classmates and the oppressive relationship she shares with her deeply religious mother—all while discovering a powerful and dangerous ability she cannot fully control. With music by Michael Gore, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, Carrie blends an electrifying contemporary score with a story about belonging, bullying, fear, and the devastating consequences of rejection.
